AI can learn how to identify which photos out of thousands contain rare species; or pinpoint an animal call out of hours of field recordings - hugely reducing the manual labour required to collect vital conservation data.

Despite my background in political ecology, I never wanted the science part of my degree to be neglected. When I joined the Nelson Mandela Institution of Science and Technology, I decided to research on the carbon sequestration and carbon footprint of hardwood timber. During my tenure, I secured a spot in the Women in Conservation Technology (WiCT) program, where I gained extensive knowledge, including the use of camera traps, human wildlife mitigation tech tools, how to use dogs in protection, earth ranger, data analysis tools, remote sensing, and GIS etc.
