Because connectivity solutions are vital to so much of our conservation tech work, our Connectivity group unites users working across a variety of tech tools. Our community has often flagged connectivity as being extremely important to their work's success, yet the buzzword solutions like IoT and LoRa can be intimidating to conservationists who are new to the topic. In this is the catch-all space for discussing the wide range of communications networks that are becoming increasingly integral to retrieving data in modern conservation tech systems, we welcome beginners, experts, and everyone in between to get involved!
By connecting novices and experts to discuss and demystify connectivity in conservation tech, this group can serve as a place to learn and explore, with spaces to talk about recent progress and developments on the horizon, share resources to help others understand key connectivity issues and why it's relevant to their work, ask questions and troubleshoot, and much more.
Below, you'll find one of our Tech Tutors episodes introducing the subject of connectivity through a tutorial on LoRa:
Sean Sturley: How do I get started with LoRa? Connectivity in conservation
And here you'll find an episode on using satellite IoT:
Alasdair Davies: How do I use satellite IoT to track wildlife and monitor remote equipment?
Finally, here's a great example of a multisensor network connecting devices across a landscape in New Zealand, courtesy of Andrew Digby (see original post here)

Hello Macayle
It is of great pleasure that there is this opportunity coming to East Africa. I would like to attend this. Do you have any recommendation for funding a student to attend such a forum? I will share this opportunity with our East Africa WhatsApp group too.
2 February 2026 2:33am
Hi Susan,
Thank you for your message.
I apologise, but as we are a non-profit and mostly volunteer-run, we are presently unable to provide funding support to people to travel to Nairobi for the forum.
Thank you for sharing WiCF with the whatsapp community; that’s lovely of you!
I can write up an official letter of invitation if that would help with a university bursary application, and WiCF attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for the day.
I have a small invitation flyer; feel free to share this with others who may be interested.
Kind regards,
Macayle

Hi Matthew, thanks a lot!
I found an example of the australian frequency plan which goes a lot further. It seems like it's 150.05 - 153.0 ...

In the U.S., 148-152MHz, 163-165MHz and 216-220MHz are the most commonly used for wildlife tracking. I think there are some very specific/narrow disallowed segments in those ranges but I've generally relied on tag manufacturers to know to avoid those. As Matthew mentioned, there are also limits on power output for legal use of these frequencies.
10 November 2025 4:08pm
Thanks a lot, Kyler. We also believe that this is largely our responsibility not to ship tags which work outside the allowed range.

New Group Proposal: Systems Builders & PACIM Designers
18 June 2025 2:52pm
19 June 2025 12:19pm
Hello again sir - PACIMs really mean 'projects' is the way I see it. Each part of the acronym can be seen as a project (if you have an assignment to do, you have a project really).
As for your query on 10 projects in 'this' group - I should ask for clarification if you mean particularly acoustics or in any group (I see now this is the acoustics thread after I selected all the groups for this post). If you are asking on acoustics, you're right - I am unsure on 10 as I am not too keen on acoustics yet. If you are asking 10 projects as a whole like 10 projects in the funding and finance group - I believe 10 to be a very reasonable number. Our projects we have co-created are for the most part replicable, rapidly deployable, quickly scalable, fundable through blended finance and more.
Thank you again for the feedback.
19 June 2025 1:43pm
Thank you for your reply, Chad
I meant 10 as a whole, indeed. Perhaps you see your post in one group, but since it is tagged for all groups, I assumed you meant 10 in total.
In your first post you explain PACIM stands for "Projects, Assignments, Campaigns, Initiatives, Movements, and Systems", so I understood it as more than just projects. Obviously, many things can be packed into a project or called a project, but then, what does it mean that 'Projects' is part of the list?
Well, if you think 10 projects is doable, then don't let me stop you.

Hi Mykhailo. That citizen science tool seems interesting. But, how do you expect people to detect microplastics (ranging from 1 µm to 5 mm in size)?
