Open Interim (1 year) Co-Chair Position 

Move BON is seeking a new Interim Co-Chair to join Lacey Hughey (Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, USA) and Sarah Davidson (Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Germany) in leading the network for a 1-year, voluntary term. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of biodiversity observation and movement ecology.

About Move BON: The Animal Movement Biodiversity Observation Network unites researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to close the science-policy gap for animal movement. Through international collaboration, Move BON works to mobilize movement data, develop standardized analytical workflows, and integrate movement-derived insights into international conservation frameworks.

Opportunities: 

  • Shape global strategy: Guide Move BON’s strategic direction, aligning priorities with GEO BON objectives and coordinating with partner organizations.
  • Represent the network: Engage with international forums and initiatives to amplify Move BON’s impact and build strategic partnerships.
  • Drive engagement: Build the network through quarterly meetings, in-person events, and creating collaborative opportunities that strengthen Move BON’s global community.
  • Amplify impact: Champion the use of movement-derived insights in conservation policy and bridge research with actionable insights at national and international levels.

     

Position details:

Open: January 6, 2026-February 8, 2026

Who can apply: All career stages, taxonomic emphases, and geographies are welcome! 

Requirements:

  • Strong written and spoken English skills.
  • Ability to participate in virtual meetings across multiple time zones, which may occasionally fall outside of standard working hours.
  • Ability to commit an average of approximately 4 hours per week (in-kind) to Move BON activities for the duration of the 1-year term.

Encouraged expertise: We encourage all those with interest and experience related to Move BON's key objectives to consider applying. We especially welcome applicants representing the southern or eastern hemispheres, and with background in the following to complement current Co-Chairs: 

  • marine or freshwater systems,
  • community engagement at the interface of science and policy,
  • national biodiversity policy, including biodiversity monitoring and spatial planning.
  • The ability to attend at least one major international meeting in person (e.g., CMS COP 15, World Biodiversity Forum, CBD COP 17) is preferred but not required.

Selection process: Applications will be reviewed by the current Co-Chairs and an ad-hoc advisory committee. All applicants will be notified of the decision in late February 2026.
