Earth Observation from Space: the Optical View

There's an online course created by the European Space Agency (ESA) currently running on Futurelearn. The course started on 12th September but there's still time to join! The course leader is Mat Disney from UCL (those of you who were at the ZSL remote sensing conference earlier this year will remember his stunning LiDAR presentation). I've just completed the first week of the 5 week course and it's very good so far.

Thanks for sharing this, Thom, it looks fascinating!

Mat's presentation at ZSL's remote sensing conference was a standout for me - it echoed the work @Tomswinfield and @Felipe-Spina have each been doing exploring building 3D models of forests from images taken with drones. Tom shared his work in case study in our resources area and at one of our meetups here in Cambridge. I think you said just said you've just joined RSPB - are you and Tom going to be doing any work together?

MOOCs are an educational wonder of the Anthropocene!

That's right, I've recently moved to Cambridge with the RSPB. I've spoken with @Tomswinfield at an internal remote sensing workshop and I did wonder if he'd presented his work to the group, so thanks for sharing the link! Tom worked with some of my previous Kew colleagues in the Harapan rainforest. It's a fascinating project and definitely worth keeping up to date with developments.

I'm currently processing data from a recent expedition to Madagascar where we trialled the use of drone imagery for quantifying forest structure in relation to 'edge effect'.

Really interesting project! When are you expecting to have some results? Do you think the use of drones was beneficial for the project? Will you be using them again?
