Join NASA’s harmful algal bloom ML challenge and win prizes!

Using satellite imagery to detect and classify the severity of cyanobacteria blooms in small, inland water bodies.

Deadline: 17 February 2023 - the deadline has passed.

Hi y'all! I'm a data scientist at a small consulting company focused on social good, and wanted to share a programming competition we just posted! Competitions are generally a great way to break into the programming space and get some python creds.

Today we launched an exciting computer vision challenge in partnership with NASA to identify harmful algal blooms in important water sources. Even better, it's punnily named the Tick Tick Bloom: Harmful Algal Bloom Detection Challenge!

:ocean: :herb: The goal of the competition is to help public health officials detect and address algal blooms in water sources like lakes and reservoirs, which can pose serious dangers to both human and ecosystem health
:satellite:  You can create new state-of-the-art methods using satellite imagery to protect communities
:money_with_wings: There's a $30,000 prize pool for the top performing teams!

You can learn more and sign up to participate by visiting the challenge here. Feel free to share with anyone else you think might be interested, and reach out if you have any questions! The competition will be open until February 17, 2023. Happy coding!
