ABOUT THE JAMII TECH PROGRAM 2024

ELIGIBILITY

Are you an international student who wants to use your skills and creativity to make a positive impact in the world? Do you want to join a diverse and collaborative team of innovators and community members in Tanzania? Do you want to develop and prototype solutions that are tailored to the local needs and context? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should apply for the Jamii Tech Incubation Program!

STRUCTURE

The Jamii Tech Program is a unique opportunity for international students to participate in an 8 - 12 week design program that connects them with intergenerational teams of Tanzanian innovators and community members. Jamii is a Swahili word that means “community”. It reflects the vision of the program, which is to empower people to create and use technologies that solve community challenges.

The program is based on the principles of human-centred design, creative problem-solving, local production, cross-cultural collaboration, and ethnographic methods. You will learn these skills through hands-on workshops, field visits, prototyping sessions, and feedback loops.

You will also work on a real-world challenge that is identified by a local partner organization, such as a school, community group, a hospital, a farm, or a social enterprise. Together with your team, you will conduct user research, generate ideas, test prototypes, and present your solution to the partner and the Jamii Tech mentors.

The program is facilitated by Twende, a Tanzanian-based non-governmental organization that runs innovation programs for people of all ages and backgrounds.

WHEN & WHERE

The program runs from June 3rd to August 23rd, 2024. It is an 8-12 week journey, depending on your availability and preferences. The program is based in Arusha, a vibrant city in northern Tanzania, near the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. You will also have the chance to visit other locations in Tanzania, such as Orkolili, where Twende has a satellite center.

You will stay in a comfortable and safe accommodation, with access to internet, electricity, water, and other amenities. You will also enjoy the delicious and diverse Tanzanian cuisine, and experience the rich and diverse culture and history of the country.
