The Mara Elephant Project, The War of Space
The expansion of the human footprint in the Greater Mara Ecosystem has resulted in a lot of human wildlife conflict and competition of resources between people and wildlife. A lot of land use changes and land sub-division has been happening across the landscape and that has resulted in the shrinking of elephant habitats and their ranges. Infrastructural development, fencing and agriculture is a big threat to wildlife and the ecosystem. The Mara Elephant Project has devised conservation technology and tools to curb conflict in the greater Mara Ecosystem. Apart from deploying male and female rangers from the community to lead in the anti-poaching and habitat protection and monitoring, we are also using drones, collars, a helicopter and in house technological tools such as EarthRanger, Elephant book and TerraChart to make data-based conservation decisions.
