Opportunity: Product Design Engineer

Applications are invited for a high-performing and experienced professional product engineer to help develop an exciting new product range within an expanding science-based SME. This product range focuses on a new generation of rapid in-field methods to detect ecologically, economically, and pathogenically important species from environmental samples. The product range will have application across all business sectors such as conservation, extractives, utilities and infrastructure.

The role will involve running hardware development projects involving electronics design. This will include, but is not limited to, working on design modules, writing design specifications, specifying components, creating schematics, evaluating designs, prototyping assemblies, and prototype testing. The role will also involve supporting the wider Research & Development team during functional system testing on the new products they develop. This will include running test protocols, investigating and resolving issues, and reporting results.

Roles & responsibilities

General

  • Work with our research scientists to develop a new product range based on Isothermal Amplification and CRISPR mediated DNA/RNA detection
  • Engineering tasks required to progress the development of new products, in particular building & testing prototypes, supplier liaison, testing, firmware development support and testing, producing and managing specifications and other related documentation
  • Preparation of new and updated engineering documents relating to designs
  • Maintaining the Design History File for new and existing product designs
  • Managing the production of engineering documentation that will be generated in design for use in production

Communication

  • Engage closely with the Research and Development, and Product Development teams to seek out and develop new opportunities
  • Attend regular update meetings with the wider team
  • Update wider company, management or board on progress as required

Person Specification

Education & qualifications

  • A degree in Electronic Engineering or similar from an accredited University or HND

Specialist knowledge, skills & experience

  • Strong working knowledge and experience of electronics and systems
  • Highly PC literate, experienced in Word/Excel etc
  • Schematic and PCB CAD design experience/skills
  • Strong analytical, test and hardware debugging skills

Interpersonal & communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills are vital
  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines
