About Lion Landscapes
Lion Landscapes is a young and dynamic large carnivore conservation and research organisation which works with local communities and other conservation stakeholders to develop programs that support lions, their prey, the habitat and local people. Lion Landscape is affiliated with Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) but operates independent programmes in Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania. In Kenya, they work in Laikipia County.
Job Description
As a Research Assistant, you will play a crucial role in implementing large carnivore and wildlife surveys using camera traps and other survey techniques. The surveys are crucial for monitoring our large carnivore conservation work and the general health of large carnivore populations in Laikipia.
Location: Nanyuki, Kenya
Type of job: Full-time
Main Responsibilities
- Implementing wildlife surveys according to plans and protocols.
- Coordinating with partners and government organisations before survey implementation.
- Managing camera trap grids and data processing (including sorting, tagging, animal identification and backup).
- Managing survey equipment.
- Assisting the wider Lion Landscapes team with other data processing and fieldwork.
- Attending workshops and contributing to team efforts.
- Providing regular updates and assisting with reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in biology or related field.
- Proficient driving skills and a valid class B driver's license. Motorcycle driving license is a plus but not required.
- Strong organisation and communication abilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
- Previous experience in wildlife research, especially with camera trap grids preferred.
