Overview

ASMSpotter is an AI tool to automatically detect artisanal mining activity, using public data from PlanetScope (highest resolutions) and Sentinel-2 (open-access, lower resolution) satellite constellations. In a demo case, the ASMSpotter was used to monitor a hotspot of artisanal and small scale gold mining (ASGM) in Suriname, indicating deforestation due to the activity, posing a threat to local communities, indigenous peoples and local biodiversity. This tool won a Microsoft AI Award 2020, currently monirots over 12,000 km^2 and outputs the location and extent of gold mines.
