Ground Control Points

Groups

I'm interested in finding out about the use of Ground Control Points (GCPs) for acquring drone imagery for mapping.

My understanding is that you would only use them if

1) Your drone  has no GPS capability

2) Your drone GPS has low accuracy

3) You require cm precision for your mapping outputs

4) You are creating a digital surface model and need accurate absolute elevation values

5) You have a low number of images or low overlap between images and GCPs will aid the 'stitching' of the images.

It would be great to hear other's thoughts.

Cheers

Hey @ahughes_rspb , thanks for starting this thread! It would be really useful to share experience on GCPs in particular. We're about to start experimenting by processing images with and without GCPs, but I expect that others are ahead of us with this. I'm particularly interested in point 4 - how much to GCPs affect the vertical accuracy of DSMs? Any advice?
