Aerospace Engineering student scoping for masters final year project- where are the monitoring bottlenecks?

Hello all! I'm a final-year MEng Aerospace Engineering student starting my final year this coming autumn. I want my final-year project to solve a genuinely useful problem in conservation, rather than just being an academic exercise. I have a strong background in mathematics, analysis, and GIS.

Before I commit to a direction, I'd love to hear from the community about where monitoring, surveying, or data collection actually gets stuck?

I'm particularly interested in problems involving things like:

  • Drone survey data that's hard or time-consuming to process or analyse
  • Areas or species that cannot be adequately monitored due to terrain, cost, or access
  • GIS or spatial data that gets collected but underused
  • Any repetitive tasks that it would be beneficial to automate
  • Non-invasive tracking and data collection

A few sentences on where the friction is in your work would be enormously helpful to me. Thank you in advance, I'm excited to find a project that might be useful to the field!
