Seeking seed funding to support rangers with new aerial monitoring technology
I’m co-developing a conservation project that uses aerial platforms + AI to strengthen wildlife protection. The idea grew directly from my work with ranger teams in Kenya, where covering vast landscapes and gathering consistent data is a daily challenge.
The challenge
Even with good tools, conservation decisions are often made on incomplete datasets:
- Large areas remain unmonitored
- Remote and high-risk zones are hard to cover regularly
- Manual reporting can be inconsistent
- This creates blind spots for security and biodiversity management
Our approach: built to support rangers
The system generates live geospatial insights that rangers can use in real time—improving situational awareness, prioritising deployments, and reducing time in high-risk patrols. It also builds a long-term aerial dataset to inform management, research, and training.
How it strengthens ranger work
- A fuller picture of biodiversity across the landscape
- Faster response to potential security risks
- Early signals for human–wildlife conflict near boundaries
- Safer, smarter tasking of teams
- An evolving dataset that benefits local training and decision-making
Where we are now
- Pilot site secured in Kenya
- Partnerships with local operators and AI specialists in place
- Short proof-of-concept trial designed and ready to run this year
We’re seeking around £30,000 in seed funding to deliver the trial and validate the system on the ground. Crucially, local rangers will be trained to run it, ensuring ownership and long-term sustainability.
If you can share advice, introductions, or funding leads, I’d love to hear from you.

Hey Barnaby,
I can't help with funding, but I'm interested in this exact field. I've worked with drones for situational awareness quite a bit and have a passion for conservation. If you're ever looking for an extra hand on the robotics/AI side of this project, feel free to reach out! Or we could just connect and exchange ideas as well. I'd love to help
