Ethics in Conservation Tech - Beyond Morality

Hello Wildlabs community,

I’d like to open a discussion about a fundamental concept that often underpins our work—ethics in conservation technology. In many conversations, I’ve noticed that ethics is frequently conflated with morality, which can limit our understanding of its role.

Why this matters:

While morality reflects personal or societal beliefs about right and wrong, ethics is about structured, context-specific frameworks that guide actions in professional or applied domains—like conservation technology.

For example:

Morality might lead someone to believe that protecting endangered species is inherently “good.”

Ethics, however, would require us to examine how we deploy technology for that protection. Are we ensuring privacy for local communities? Are we minimizing harm to the environment with the tools we use, like drones or tracking devices?

Key questions for discussion:

1. How do you see the difference between ethics and morality in your conservation work?

2. Are there ethical frameworks you’ve encountered or applied when using technology for conservation?

3. How can we build shared ethical principles in conservation tech, especially when working across cultures and with diverse stakeholders?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and challenges. Let’s explore how we can use this distinction to strengthen our collective impact!

Looking forward to your insights,

Beni Beeri

I see that there are big opportunities here in ethics to help protect people, both those placing equipment as well as those whose lives may be surveilled by making more use of encrypted platforms in our deployments.

This doesn't solve the problems of corruption by authorities with control over platforms, but it solves the problem that capture technology reveals the lives of the people in the area of endangers the lives of those that placed the equipment by leaving an evidence trail as to who they are. Think anti-poaching tech for example.
