Open source proposal idea for ICTC 2026

Hi everyone,

We (i.e. @srankin, @briannajohns, and I @Nycticebus_scientia) of the WILDLABS Open Source Solutions group have a rough idea in mind for a proposal for the upcoming International Conservation Technology Conference (ICTC) 2026.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that any of us could actually make it to the meeting! Therefore, we're "open sourcing" the rough proposal idea here, and happy for someone to take it up, polish it, and submit it (attribution appreciated)!

The idea is to focus on the adaptability/remix-ability of open source software in scientific research workflows/pipelines. For example, there's real benefit in this adaptability where you could use it to improve the interoperability between open source tools to create a solution that's best for your use case.

One story I love is the QGreenland, which takes fully open source software - the Jupyter notebook platform, Linux operations system, QGIS GIS software, and open geospatial data on Greeland - and remix them into a teaching tool for geospatial work on Greenland data.

With that in mind, we think there's a good discussion to be had on how to take advantage of the remixability of open source tools to fit them to your scientific workflow.

That's what we've got so far. Respond here and let us know your thoughts, especially if you can turn this into a submission before the November 15 submission deadline!
