Looking for a data job in conservation

Hi everybody,

I've been around here on WILDLABS for a while and have been following what's going on. Yesterday I finally participated in the Variety Hour for the first time. It was not only really interesting but also nice to meet such a friendly and welcoming crowd. Afterwards I felt encouraged to make this post.

I'm currently a Data Scientist at UNICEF Germany but would like to transition into a data role in conservation. This space is so important and growing but I feel that data jobs are still somewhat scarce or hard to get - especially for career switchers. Maybe someone here can help me out or point me to a specific opportunity/organization/resource. The people from this community I was already in touch with were so friendly and helpful!

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • technical role where I can use my Data Science, Machine Learning and Remote Sensing skills to help nature and people (I'm quite open domain-wise or regarding the specific context)
  • team with nice people to learn from
  • full or part-time, contract opportunities for a limited amount of time could also be interesting
  • hybrid or remote in Western/Northern Europe

Here's what I can offer:

  • 5+ years experience in Data Science and Machine Learning (e. g. Python, R, SQL) and 2+ years experience in GIS and Remote Sensing (e. g. Google Earth Engine)
  • experience with land cover mapping in KAZA in collaboration with WWF Germany's Space+Science team
  • experience with movement ecology in collaboration with Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MoveApps) and Okavango Research Insitute
  • I'm highly motivated to contribute to relevant societal and environmental issues, such as conservation and climate, and curious about learning new tools and diving into novel domains

I'd be glad to hear about potential opportunities and general feedback. Feel free to connect on LinkedIn or check out my personal website.

All the best and greetings from Cologne (Germany),

Alex

Hi Alex,

There are now many synergies between wildlife, conservation, and livestock. All are using geolocation software, and with the upcoming EUDR, it might be worth looking into this area.

While it's not strictly conservation work, these companies could provide you with valuable connections. These connections could potentially lead to a role in conservation.
