Study design of movement ecology projects

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently released a massive update to my R Shiny application and toolbox designed for researchers working in movement ecology and animal tracking: movedesign. You can use it to evaluate your study design by assessing sampling duration, interval, and, now, the number of individuals needed for reliable population-level estimates.  This makes it easier to plan and evaluate studies with a focus on home range areas, or movement speed and distance traveled.

Essentially, it helps you answer questions like "How long should I track each individual?", "How often should new locations be collected?", and "How many individuals should be tracked?" to achieve reliable estimates of home range areas and movement speed. It is a work in progress, as I am always trying to improve it and make it easier to use.

The extended workflow is covered in the following preprint:

And the application itself is directly available on CRAN, and through a GitHub repository:

I want this application and workflows to be useful to all types of use cases, so if you have specific requests, need help evaluating specific study designs, or have ideas for additional features, I’d be happy to hear from you! Contact me and let me know :)
