New FishSounds Website Update!

🔉 Major FishSounds Website Update!!

The beta version of the new FishSounds.net is live now and will be finalized over the next month. Most of the updates won’t necessarily be noticeable on first glance, so a few of the more consequential changes are outlined below.

First, we now have simple and advanced search options to serve a variety of users. For our recordings, we are also in the process of implementing new visualizations, measurements, and standardized sound categories that will operate alongside the onomatopoeic names we’re all used to.

We have also started adding information from references published in the years 2024 and 2025, with 2026 to soon follow! The systematized review of these new publications may not be completed for another month or so, so please understand that some may be missing for now.

We made a few more minor changes around the website, as well, such as updating the FishSounds Fisheries project page to include an acoustic catalog of Canadian fished species.

We are especially excited with our new admin portal, which will allow us to update the website continuously! From now on, FishSounds datasets may be updated at any point, so please take care to note the website version and access date to properly cite your data.

The admin portal will also allow us to regularly import FishBase data and export our data. Our long-term data repository on Borealis will soon be reorganized and updated to better reflect the website.

We are incredibly grateful to WILDLABS, Arm, Lucia Di Iorio, NSERC, and many others for supporting and funding our work. We hope to continue improving in the years to come!
