I am currently working with the Human-Wildlife Conflict Cell at the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. As part of this work, I am interested in studying infrasonic vocalizations (rumbles) produced by elephants to monitor their movement patterns, with the goal of predicting elephant movement and helping mitigate human-elephant conflict.
I have the following questions:
- Besides the AudioMoth, are there other devices capable of recording infrasonic sound (typically below 20 Hz) suitable for field deployment in monitoring elephant rumbles?
- What are the individual components required to set up an AudioMoth for infrasound recording, specifically
- The main device/circuit board
- The plug-in low-frequency microphone
- The low-frequency audio filtering board
- The plug-in underground (geophone/seismic) sensor
- The protective case
- Is the low-frequency audio filtering board essential for capturing usable infrasonic data, or can this be bypassed/substituted?
- Where can these components be purchased or acquired (India-accessible suppliers, if possible)?
- What software tools are recommended for visualizing, processing, and analyzing low-frequency elephant vocalizations (e.g., spectrogram generation, filtering, and rumble detection/classification)?
