BurdyGurdy.com is an online bird identification training game designed to improve the user's identification accuracy. BurdyGurdy uses eBird’s open API to identify which birds have been recently spotted in a user’s chosen geographic. Then an adaptive algorithm guides the user to mastery of those birds by progressing from the most common to least common birds, giving the most emphasis on species the user struggles with. The app tracks progress and uses songs and photos from multiiple sources in quiz questions, so you don't just learn the picture, you learn the bird.
When you answer correctly, the answer reveal screen presents the user with all the data they would expect from a quality, multi-media bird atlas, and more, including: recent sightings of the bird which can be viewed on an interactive map, a selection of recording of the bird, and photos of related species with quick links to their detailed info pages.
As the user masters birds (by audio, visual, or taxonomic clues) they build a life list of their mastery. Friend connections allow users to see each other's life lists and receive notifications of friend progress.
The app if highly configurable, allowing the user many choices for what kind of questions they want to be given (e.g. the user can play with ony audio clues or only warblers or a subset of the warblers) and whether they want their mastered status for birds to expire on after a given period of time. Experienced birders might enjoy playing with their morning coffee to see what new birds have flown into their area in the past 24 hours.
Works well on both desktop and mobile.
