Interested in joining a global initiative on marine eDNA observations?
Have a check at the eDNA Expeditions 2026-2028 project!
eDNA Expeditions 2026-2028 harnesses the power of environmental DNA to build a global biomolecular observatory for marine life. Led by the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), the project is local by impact and global by design. From 2026 to 2028, local teams at 25 marine sites worldwide will carry out repeated sampling campaigns, with results flowing back as decision-ready insights to directly support local marine management and conservation, as well as contribute to global ocean knowledge.
We are currently in the site recruitment phase, and are welcoming applications from marine sites from all over the world: marine protected areas, conservation sites, or other ecologically significant marine sites. There are no participation fees: The project covers sampling kits, training, sample shipping, data processing, and the dashboards. Participating sites are in charge of the operational efforts for sampling activities.
🏆 What do participating sites gain?
✔️ Training and guidance in eDNA sampling
✔️ Complete eDNA sampling kits
✔️ Access to site-level results and decision-ready insights
✔️ A powerful local engagement opportunity (staff, visitors, schools, communities)
✔️ Visibility as part of a global biomolecular observatory for marine life
✔️ Connection to the eDNA Expeditions community
🛠️ What does participation involve?
✔️ A three-year commitment
✔️ 6–9 sampling campaigns over the project period
✔️ Engagement of local communities in at least one campaign
✔️ Following a simple, robust sampling protocol

@LaurentChmiel Excellent initiative! 🌊🧬 eDNA Expeditions 2026–2028 is a powerful example of how local eDNA sampling can generate global, decision-ready insights for marine conservation. Great opportunity for marine sites worldwide to build capacity, engage communities, and contribute to a global biomolecular observatory.

Too bad we saw this just now. I hope we get to join another one soon.
