Open PhD project: Decoding and mapping Earth's species interactions with ecological AI

A 3-year, fully-funded PhD studentship at the interface of ecological theory, AI and global biodiversity mapping

Deadline: 3 May 2026 - the deadline has passed.
London - United Kingdom

Hi everyone! (and apologies for cross-posting)

In collaboration with Iran Roman and the QMUL Centre for Multimodal AI, the McFadden Computational Ecology Lab is offering a 3-year, fully-funded PhD studentship at the interface of ecological theory, AI and global biodiversity mapping. Note that only UK residents are eligible.

The overall goal of the project is to help expand the field of environmental AI from its main focus on species towards unraveling the often-complex ecological dynamics that sustain Earth’s threatened biodiversity. We aim to accomplish this goal by building analysis pipelines to directly monitor and map ecological function.

Students should ideally have a strong computer science or mathematical background and be interested in applying their skills to environmental problems, and we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and career trajectories.

Please submit your application by May 3rd using the link below, and if you have any questions please reach send me an email ([email protected]). Note also on the online application there's no need for a research proposal, so in this section please just upload another copy of your personal statement.
