We welcome applications that fall into the “boring to fund” category as long as they are relevant in the conservation technology space.

We will consider applications that serve at least one of the following technologies:

  • AI / Machine learning
  • Bioacoustics
  • Biologgers / Animal tracking
  • Camera traps
  • Data management and processing platforms (e.g., Movebank, Wildlife Insights, Zooniverse)
  • GIS and remote sensing (satellite, multispectral, and thermal imagery, LiDAR)
  • eDNA & genomics
  • Mobile apps & citizen science platforms
  • Non-AI computational tools (e.g., R, Python, statistical software)
  • Networked sensors
  • Protected area management tools (e.g., SMART, EarthRanger)
  • Remote sensing & GIS
  • UAVs / drones

We will also consider applications that address at least one of the following conservation challenges:

  • Biodiversity and/or environmental monitoring
  • Captive breeding
  • Citizen science
  • Climate change / Resilience
  • Habitat loss or destruction (e.g., deforestation)
  • Endangered species & ecosystems
  • Illegal or unsustainable fishing (IUU)
  • Human-wildlife conflict and coexistence
  • Invasive species
  • Pollution
  • Protected area management and planning
  • Scientific research
  • Species protection
  • Wildlife crime / Illegal wildlife trade / Poaching

Please contact us if technologies or conservation challenges are missing from these lists. Alternatively, apply to the fund and include information that clarifies your work's relationship with the conservation technology sector.

We encourage all who are eligible to apply, regardless of your location or career status.

Please note that you can submit multiple projects, but applicants should submit each project independently.

Selection criteria and judging

This year, the seven members of the WILDLABS team will review these applications. The team will review your application on the following criteria:

  • Unique fit with The Boring Fund (scored out of 3):
    • 0: Your project does not align with the goals or interests of The Boring Fund or can find support from other types of funding.
    • 1: Your project fits with The Boring Fund, but the connection is weak or not well-defined and can be indirectly supported by other types of funding, like inclusion in a bigger project.
    • 2: Your project fits well with The Boring Fund, aligns with its objectives, and may have difficulty receiving support through other types of funding.
    • 3: Your project is an excellent match for The Boring Fund. It is strongly aligned in its purpose and is almost impossible to fund with other types of funding.
  • Relevance to the conservation technology sector and community (scored out of 3):
    • 0: The project has little to no relevance to the conservation technology sector and does not contribute to community growth or collaboration.
    • 1: The project has some relevance to the conservation technology sector, but its connection to community impact and collaboration is unclear.
    • 2: The project is relevant and has a potential direct or indirect impact on the conservation technology sector and the community, with some opportunity for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
    • 3: The project is highly relevant, with a significant direct or indirect impact on the sector and community. It strongly promotes collaboration, community engagement, and knowledge exchange.
  • Application quality and perceived feasibility (scored out of 3):
    • 0: The project description is vague and unclear or the project appears unrealistic or unachievable.
    • 1: The project is somewhat clear, but lacks specific details or faces significant challenges.
    • 2: The project is mostly clear, with good detail. It appears feasible with manageable challenges.
    • 3: The project is very clear, well-articulated, easy to understand, and appears highly feasible with a well-thought-out plan.

Similarly to the WILDLABS Awards, we will look for projects that are led by and support underrepresented groups, and we will consider favorably active involvement with the WILDLABS community.
