Overview

Raspberry Pi is a series of small single-board computers (SBCs) developed in the United Kingdom by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in association with Broadcom. The original model became more popular than anticipated, selling outside its target market for uses such as robotics. It is widely used in many areas, such as for weather monitoring, because of its low cost, modularity, and open design. It is typically used by computer and electronic hobbyists, due to its adoption of HDMI and USB devices.

In the Orcasound hydrophone network, we've used both Raspberry Pi 3B+ and Raspberry Pi 4 single board computers. Overall, I'm very impressed with their reliability, running our "orcanode" streaming software 24/7 for years on end, often in enclosures that are close to the ocean. Usually the SD card fails before the Pi does!

My only wish is for some real audio capabilities out-of-the-box. Depressingly, all they offer is a headphone jack! As a consequence, to answer our science and PAM questions related to orcas, we've paired the RPis with the Pisound ADC HAT (Hardware Attached on Top), made in Lithuania and capable of digitizing 2 audio channels at 48/96/192kHz and 24 bit depth.
