Postdoctoral Fellow in Soundscape Ecology at Purdue University

The Purdue University Center for Global Soundscapes is seeking a new postdoctoral fellow to work on a project at the intersection of soundscape monitoring and remote sensing / geospatial data

Deadline: 15 October 2022 - the deadline has passed.
Indiana

The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources and the Center for Global Soundscapes at Purdue University seeks a recent PhD who is interested in the use of acoustic, UAV-based and space-based remote sensing to create models of biodiversity in diverse terrestrial ecosystems including those from Central Hardwoods of Indiana, Central Florida wetlands, Tanzanian Miombo Woodlands, steppes of Mongolia and the mangroves of Bangladesh. The work is funded by NASA, NSF and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct analysis of remotely sensed data using a variety of machine learning algorithms (e.g., CNN, ANN, random forests) of multispectral data of landscapes and soundscapes. Knowledge of the ecology of these terrestrial ecosystems, traditional statistics, GIS, remote sensing, soundscape ecology, and machine learning in an R environment is necessary. Work in our center is occurring across a broad transdisciplinary environment composed of scholars in the ecological, social, and data sciences as well as in the humanities. The work environment is fast paced and the group is highly productive. The position is available immediately, is available for 1.5 years and may be extended depending on performance for up to 3 years pending available funds.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in natural resource management, ecology, and/or acoustic remote sensing. Knowledge of soundscape ecology is also required. Ability and desire to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. A commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Experience with GIS software and R also necessary.

Desirable qualifications: expert knowledge of machine learning algorithms including CNN, ANN and/or random forests, the analysis of multispectral and/or LiDAR data, use of massive/big data in analysis, and the ability to travel to remote locations in international research stations to conduct field research.

To apply, please submit electronically a statement of research interest including how you meet the minimum and/or desirable qualifications, a brief DEI statement (minimum of 500 words), curriculum vitae, at least one writing sample, and names and contact information (including email address) of three professional references to Bryan C. Pijanowski ([email protected]). Review of applications will start August 22, 2022. Candidate needs to start no later than October 15, 2022.

Purdue University is an equal access/equal opportunity university.
