Advances in modelling and analysis of animal movement

A recent editorial in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution highlights advances in animal movement ecology. With new GPS and biologging tools, researchers are uncovering fine-scale behaviors, migration patterns, and interactions with changing environments. The article also stresses future challenges, like scaling from individuals to ecosystems and applying machine learning for complex movement data.

The editorial also discusses future directions and challenges: scaling from individual to population/ecosystem level, integrating movement with demographic outcomes (survival, reproduction), linking movement to ecosystem functions (e.g. seed dispersal, disease spread), improving tracking tech, remote sensing, and using machine learning/data assimilation for large and complex datasets
