Hello Everyone
I am looking for a PhD student to join my lab at UCL Computer Science to work on a project that sits right at the intersection of AI and wildlife conservation.
The supervision team includes Prof. Sarah Durant and Dr Ben Evans at the Institute Of Zoology (Zoological Society of London (ZSL)) to develop AI tools for the global monitoring of cheetahs. This project is part of the AI-INTERVENE doctoral training programme (https://lnkd.in/dXVqvZRy).
Leveraging unique spot patterns and ZSL’s massive 34-year dataset, we aim to build AI tools that track cheetah populations and map illegal trade routes. This project goes beyond off-the-shelf classifiers, challenging you to develop novel computational methods (3D-aware geometric deep learning, reinforcement learning agents, state estimation, etc.) to solve complex biological problems.
You do not need to be a pure biologist or a pure computer scientist. We are looking for someone who sits in the middle.
- You might have a background in Engineering, CS, or Maths and want to apply your skills to real-world biology.
- Or you might be an Ecologist with strong coding skills (Python, MATLAB, etc.) looking to deepen your technical expertise.
This position is fully funded (stipend and fees) and open to both Home and INTERNATIONAL applicants😎
If you are interested in using engineering to solve difficult problems in conservation, please apply below! Deadline is 19 January 2026🤓
