Freelance Mechanical Engineer at CatchCam Technologies

Quick Summary

  • Job Role: Mechanical Engineer
  • Type of Contract: Freelance (1-2 days per week)
  • Start date: As soon as possible
  • Location: Remote, with flexible working hours and occasional travel to team meetings and field deployments
  • To apply: Send your CV and a short cover letter to [email protected]

Overview

We’re looking for a smart and practical Mechanical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team at CatchCam Technologies developing innovative underwater products for marine conservation, research, and sustainable ocean industries. You’ll have strong skills in CAD preferably with Fusion 360, design for additive manufacturing (3D printing), and a flair for solving real-world engineering challenges in harsh marine environments.

As part of a small team, you’ll have a real impact, collaborating closely to create robust, cost-effective, and field-ready underwater products. From concept sketches to full deployment, you’ll own the mechanical design process, ensuring our products survive pressure, saltwater corrosion, biofouling, and the rigours of field operations.

Job Description

You will design, prototype, and iterate on mechanical systems for underwater applications, including sensor housings, aquaculture hardware, modular buoy systems, and underwater flyers.

Your work will involve:

  • Translating functional requirements into manufacturable designs.
  • Selecting appropriate materials for marine use.
  • Designing for both rapid prototyping (3D printing) and scalable production.
  • Testing prototypes in lab and field trials, and refining based on performance data.

Typical related projects you may have worked on include:

  • Underwater camera housings for AUVs or diver-operated systems.
  • Buoys and mooring structures for aquaculture or environmental monitoring.
  • Custom waterproof connectors, seals, and gaskets for subsea electronics.
  • Underwater robotics or drones.
  • Hydrodynamic design of towed structures.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design activities for new underwater products.
  • Develop CAD models and engineering drawings using Fusion 360.
  • Optimise designs for 3D printing, CNC machining, and moulding.
  • Specify materials, components, and finishes for marine durability.
  • Build and test prototypes; analyse results and improve designs.
  • Collaborate with electronics, software, and field operations teams.
  • Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and revision control.
  • Contribute to field deployments, troubleshooting mechanical systems on-site.

We expect...

Essential:

  • Must be self-driven and take ownership of the mechanical design function, working independently and proactively to deliver results .
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Fusion 360 for complex assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience in design for additive manufacturing (FDM, SLA, SLS).
  • Understanding of marine environmental challenges (pressure, corrosion, fouling).
  • Experience with mechanical testing and validation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt designs based on field feedback.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics and hydrodynamic considerations.
  • Experience in pressure vessel design for underwater housings.
  • Field experience in marine deployments (e.g., on boats, dive sites).

Benefits

  • Be part of an innovative, mission-driven team creating products for ocean sustainability.
  • Flexible working (location and hours).
  • Opportunities for site visits and hands-on field trials.
