Hello Human-Wildlife Conflict Group!
Turbo Fladry is a speciality electric fence wire that has been studied for use deterring wolves from control areas - typically calving areas for livestock. Turbo fladry features a conductive wire to carry current from an electric fence with interwoven fladry (flagging) as a visual cue. It has been widely studied and reported as being successful for short-term wolf deterrents. See this UC California resource for more reading or Lance et all 2010. Biological, technical and social aspects of applying electrified fladry for livestock protection from wolves (Canis lupus). Wildlife Research 37(8) 708-714.
Turbo fladry works by carrying an electric fence current as well as using the visual movement of the fladry to keep wolves from crossing its boundary, exploiting wolves territorial nature. Individual effectiveness varies by region, attractant, and even pack but studies found it working in a single location for 1 to 3 months. After this period of time it does need to be redeployed to maintain effectiveness. Unlike standard permanent electric fences, this does not form a complete physical barrier but rather relies on a single strand and the added visual element to deter wolves. This reduces the land users cost and time to deploy. It is most commonly used around calving time to reduce wolf predation of livestock.
Despite the scientific study, commercial availability of turbo fladry is limited and historically only produced on order. We have designed our own Turbo Fladry as stocking product to our electric fence line. A few details on our product:
- 100 m (325') spools
- 100 m (325') spools
- Polyethelene twine with 6 strands of stainless and 3 strands of copper wire
- Alternating blue/yellow fladry rather than traditional red - shows up better for canid eyesight
- Anti-twist technique to prevent fladry from tangling in the wind.
- Flag spacing is 0.46m
Our pricing is $312.00 CAD per 100m (USD 249.60). We stock this product in our Canadian and USA warehouses, with worldwide shipping available. Visit our website for more information.
Margo Supplies has a long history of electric fencing for human-predator conflicts, often at landfills and agricultural locations. Typically our main target species is the three North American bear species (grizzly, black, and polar) but we often work on projects with wolf presence. We have seen increased social acceptance of some predators on the landscape in North America, specifically co-existance success of black bears and at least holding steady if not slightly growing populations of grizzly bears in most jurisdictions. However, human tolerance to wolves seems especially low, even outsizing the real damage they cause. I am very interested in further work on wolf co-existence.
