Game-changing Bat Detectors to Hit Global Market

Manufacturing Partnership Brings Low-Cost Pipistrelle Family of Detectors to Researchers, Ecologists and Bat Enthusiasts Around the World

Phil Atkin and Smith Robotics Ltd are pleased to announce that the Pipistrelle range of Bat Detectors is now commercially available for the first time. As Pipistrelle’s exclusive manufacturing and sales partner, Smith Robotics will be supplying these innovative bat detectors to researchers and ecologists worldwide. This new partnership will open the door to novel and exciting bat projects of all kinds, thanks to the ready availability of the Pipistrelle ultra low-cost detectors.

Phil Atkin, the developer of the Pipistrelle technology, says, ‘Since 2022, the Pipistrelle family of bat detectors has only been available to users who were able to build the devices themselves, by hand. This painstaking task is not for everyone, which is why our partnership with Smith Robotics is such an important milestone. Our goal has always been to inspire and enable bat research. Now, thanks to Smith Robotics, that goal has become a reality.’

Ryan Smith, the founder and owner of Smith Robotics, agrees, ‘As an innovative technology company specialising in advanced agricultural sensors and wildlife monitoring solutions, we understand the Pipistrelle technology as well as the market. We have just opened our online shop (https://shop.smithrobotics.co.uk/) and already, orders for Pipistrelle detectors have begun to pour in. We have no doubt that there is a large and untapped market for these low-cost, feature-rich bat detectors, and we are delighted to partner with Phil to bring them to a wider audience.’

In spite of the the fact that up till now, all Pipistrelle bat detectors had to be built by hand, over 2200 circuit boards have been sold since 2022. Those boards were bought by researchers, ecologists and individuals around the world, from Australia to the USA to Europe, who were keen to explore the possibilities of the detectors. Feedback and suggestions from these early adopters have been incorporated into the latest Pipistrelle products, ensuring that this novel technology has been thoroughly tested and proven in the field.

Jose María De La Lama Pesquera,  Director of Innovation at BIOSFERA, an environmental consultancy in Spain, is one of those early adopters. He says, ‘Our team has been building and using Pipistrelle bat detectors for more than a year, and they have truly transformed our project work. Their extremely low cost means that we can deploy dozens rather than a handful of bat detectors in the field, which is a real game changer. We are excited about Pipistrelle’s new manufacturing partnership, which will allow us to expand our bat projects without having to dedicate staff time to electronics assembly’.

The Pipistrelle family of bat detectors, the π•pistrelle active bat detector and the pippyg passive detector, are now available exclusively from the Smith Robotics web shop shop.smithrobotics.co.uk and are priced at £40 each, inclusive of VAT.
