About the Earthshot Prize

Taking inspiration from President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot which united millions of people around an organising goal to put man on the moon and catalysed the development of new technology in the 1960s, The Earthshot Prize is centred around five ‘Earthshots’ – simple but ambitious goals for our planet which if achieved by 2030 will improve life for us all, for generations to come.

Many of the solutions needed to reach our five Earthshots already exist – the task is to celebrate and scale them, with the ambition that they lead to mass adoption and replication.

The projects that will win The Earthshot Prize are the outstanding actions and initiatives that are demonstrating positive effects on people’s lives and progress towards our Earthshots. By identifying and highlighting these solutions, The Earthshot Prize will inspire and celebrate new, collaborative action to meet the environmental challenges we face.

The Earthshot Prize is centred around five ‘Earthshots’ – simple but ambitious goals for our planet which if achieved by 2030 will improve life for us all, for generations to come.

These are:

  • Protect and restore nature
  • Clean our air
  • Revive our oceans
  • Build a waste-free world
  • Fix our climate

After the awards, each winner will receive a global platform and prestigious profile, with their stories being showcased over the decade with the ambition that their solutions lead to mass adoption, replication and scaling.

The £1 million in prize money will support environmental and conservation projects that are agreed with the winners.

Shortlisted nominees will also be given tailored support and opportunities to help scale their work, including being connected with an ecosystem of likeminded individuals and organisations.

Nominating partner, FFI, seeks nominations

As a nominating partner for the Earthshot Prize, Fauna & Flora International is now seeking worthy ideas from their partner network to put forward, both for this and future rounds. FFI is particularly keen to identify potential nominations for the ‘nature’ and ‘oceans’ Earthshots. FFI is seeking to identify ideas that provide a step change in addressing these key threats – ideas that have been tested to a point but need an injection of support to take off and work at scale to provide real and measurable benefits for the planet and for people. These can come from individuals, organisations, the private sector or consortia.
