Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are increasingly used around the world, and coupled with the increasing global commitments to protect 30% of the sea by 2030, their use is expected to continue to grow. Effective enforcement and management of these MPAs is critical to achieving MPA conservation goals and improving fisheries outcomes. SMART was specifically developed to optimise PA enforcement and monitoring in resource limited situations, and is now implemented in over 1,000 sites in more than 70 countries, including over 120 MPA sites and broader MPA networks. SMART software makes it possible to collect, store, communicate and analyze data on illegal activities, wildlife, patrol routes, and management actions to better deploy resources and evaluate performance.

This webinar will give an overview of SMART and provide on the ground examples of its marine applications via several diverse case studies. We will also detail some exciting new SMART developments on the horizon in the coming year, including targeted integrations to help tackle illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing.
