About the position

Applications are invited for a next generation sequencing specialist to join the product delivery team at Nature Metrics. Nature Metrics brings DNA-based tools to environmental managers to measure and monitor biodiversity. The post of Senior Laboratory Technician will be laboratory-based role focusing on the sequencing of environmental samples. You will have in-depth, hands-on knowledge of Illumina based sequencing platforms including MiSeq. We are seeking someone who enjoys working in a dynamic, collaborative, team environment.

Key Roles and Responsibilities


  • Being pro-active in supporting business growth.
  • Creating and reviewing technical and quality documents (SOPs, work instructions etc.)
  • Ensuring client samples are processed within time as required by Standard Operating Procedures allowing sufficient time for data analysis and reporting.
  • Scheduling sequencing runs both internally and externally and assisting with process flow optimisation
  • Ensuring sequencing data is of the highest quality standards.
  • Training junior members of the team ensuring training and activities are aligned.


  • Follow Nature Metrics standard operating procedures
  • Be a brand ambassador, adhere to Nature Metrics Policies and Values


  • Reporting to Operations Scientist with close collaboration with Head of Science.
  • Collaborate closely with other members of the Product Delivery team and maintain ongoing communication to ensure efficient planning and prioritisation of tasks


  • Use COSHH and risk assessments, compliance with company procedures and HSE legal requirements.

Person Specification

  • Education & Qualifications
  • BSc in Biological or Molecular Sciences
  • MSc or PhD not essential

Specialist knowledge, skills & experience

  • High level of attention to detail is vital
  • Practical experience of working with the Illumina MiSeq platform is essential
  • Knowledge/experience of other Illumina sequencing platforms (particularly HiSeq & Novaseq) is advantageous
  • Hands on experience preparing amplicons and genomic DNA/RNA samples for sequencing
  • Candidates who also have experience of long-read sequencing (e.g. PacBio, ONT) are encouraged to apply

  • Willing to follow established protocols
  • Willing to mentor junior members of the team
