Job Opportunity: GIS/GPS Crew

The Student Conservation Association is accepting applications now for a three month summertime position with the GIS/GPS Crew in Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The GIS/GPS crew will work in the field collecting and uploading GPS data to ArcGIS Online. They will also have the opportunity to map and collect data regarding wildlife habitat, water quality, and fisheries. The ideal candidate must already have knowledge of GPS and compass navigation. Training in protected species identification and nesting bird surveying will be provided.

Crew Responsibilities

The crew will be expected to travel routes in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area by four wheel drive vehicle, foot, mountain bike, and possibly OHV or motorcycle to complete a route inventory to be used in travel management planning. The crew will collect data via a phone or tablet GPS unit and upload collected data to ArcGIS Online and manage the information using ArcMap. This will include working with the GIS specialist to develop products for an interdisciplinary team. The crew will also map areas of concern for invasive weeds, water quality, fisheries and wildlife habitat. Ability to independently travel over rough country and navigate by GPS and map and compass is required.

Compensation Amounts

  • $650- one time RT travel allowance
  • $116 - weekly living allowance
  • Housing included
