What events are you looking forward to this year?

Hi everyone, It's my first day back in the office after a very welcome holiday break, and I'm so happy to be back! I'm taking stock of the year to come and am wondering what...

It's pretty big for NGOs and I would say there is growing involvement from companies? But it's usually those with strong conservation partnerships. The bigger one is World Conservation Congress - but this is only every few years. We've put in a workshop aligned with our movement ecology work, will likely do some talks, and will be hosting side events (both networking and meetings). I'm hearing about quite a lot of other tech events/conversations being organised, so it should be a good place to connect with a good cross section of the conservation tech community.

Here's a new one for your calendar!

Circle the dates for this year's EarthRanger User Conference. Hosted in Cape Town from 1-5 November 2023, the EarthRanger User Conference is a premier global annual event where conservation practitioners worldwide convene to discuss important challenges and solutions. Learn from peers and experts, get hands-on training on the tools to empower your work, and connect with some of the world’s leading conservationists and organizations.

For the first time, we’re joining forces with SMART to provide you with even more opportunities to collaborate with those in your field and improve the effectiveness of your wildlife conservation efforts.

What conservation and tech podcasts are you listening to?

Hey Wildlabbers!I'm starting to scope out an exciting mystery project (that you can probably make a decent educated guess about based on this thread's title) and I'd like to take...

I enjoyed this recent episode:

Transcribed at :

featuring amongst others @BlairRCostelloe and @martinwikelski on biologging and other interesting wildlife tech.

I love Ologies. It's not a super technical podcast, but very enjoyable! Alie covers a myriad of topics and interviews an expert or two each episode. It's a nice way to hear some of the details of different types of jobs, industries and topics.

Posting this with the caveat that I have NOT listened to this yet so it's not an endorsement. I have skimmed the accompanying article though and found it through Simon Gardener who I swear is the best person to follow on linkedin for relevant enviornment + tech content, so it's relevant and on the 'listen later' list

Hi James, and welcome to WILDLABS! It's a truly amazing community :)

Just wondering if TCA is only focused on camera-trapping or if you all are using other conservation tech like acoustic monitoring?

Hi James.

I'm Akiba from FreakLabs, a conservation tech company. We're currently doing a lot of work in Australia and also there about half our time. Most of our work deals with wireless monitoring or camera trap modifications. We don't do much on the post-processing/analysis side, however we're currently engaged in several projects modifying camera traps for specific purposes. It'd be great to have a call and hear more about what you are doing over there. Since you're in New Guinea, it'd be easy to visit when we're in Australia which would make any collaborations much easier. Let me know if you'd like to have a call and explore potential collaborations.

Akiba

Hi Carly, many thanks for getting back to me and apologies for the slow reply. The internet has been down here for the last week. We do not currently do any acoustic monitoring but would definitely be interested. Do get in touch if you have more information in this regard.

What kinds of events are you looking for on our calendar?

Hey folks! As you know, community members can share directly to our Events calendar here on WILDLABS now. So I'm wondering what you'd all like to see more of on our calendar in the...

I'm obviously quite biased, but always looking for more acoustic monitoring stuff! ;)

I think all conferences nowadays should be hybrid. We obviously have the capacity to do virtual since that's what everyone pivoted to during the pandemic, but I do also value the benefits of in-person components. So hybrid seems the best of the both worlds to continue increasing accessibility and inclusion while still fostering collaboration and networking. Just my 2 cents.

I'm always a sucker for a live demo (on anything really) too!
