Hi Brett!
Thanks! Pure procrastination on my side. I find it a bit of a pity how quiet it can be here sometimes...
The project you refer to sound super interesting. You should get your cousin to join Wildlabs and tell us about it. As part of my job, I am monitoring muskoxen at our research station in Greenland. Perhaps we could get some ideas!

Hello everyone! 🥳
I’m Andrzej Białaś and I am the Data4Good Lead at Appsilon. I found this community a while ago and mostly lurked around. The intro is well overdue!
Happy to connect with others working on using technology for the benefit of the planet & people (Add me on LinkedIn or email at [email protected]). I also have a LI Newsletter showcasing news from across #DataForGood, #Sustainability, #ClimateChange, #AI & #Tech.
One of our keystone projects coming from the Data4Good initiative is Mbaza AI - an open-source algorithm that allows rapid biodiversity monitoring at scale. But we also do a ton of other cool projects.
- Counting Antarctic Bird Nests: Remotely Sensed Keystone Species Project, or
- Machine Learning and Plankton: Copepod Prosome and Lipid Sac Segmentation,
- and more 🙂

Hi All,
I an recent joiner to WILDLABS and really enjoyed the Variety Hour last month and I am looking forward to finding out more about all the cool work people do here.
What kind of interfaces can we create that connect us to data on wildlife and the environment?
That is what I am researching as a PhD student in the ATLAS Institute at University of Colorado at Boulder. I have a background in design, data visualisation, and creating tools for citizen science, plus an unqualified love of the outdoors, especially mountains and birds!
I'm really interested in how working with communities we could co-create Digital Twins of the environments and inhabitants around us, and telepresent experiences of nature through Augmented Reality, Tangible User Interfaces, and Wearables. This would be to help engagement with topics important to the community, but also introducing novel ways for scientists and conservation enthusiasts to experience the data they collect. I made a vision video to try and communicate this project idea.
Edge computing, sensing devices, and IoT for conservation, are fields I'd love to learn more on, especially how AI can play a role in data gathering about wildlife.
I'm keen to hear about the challenges experts and enthusiasts face in conservation tech and how design and creative engineering might be able to play a role in tackling those challenges. And I'm looking to collaborate with communities in the conservation tech space like WILDLABS.
If you have a current project or one in mind that overlaps with any of the areas above, I'd love to chat with you. My email is [email protected]

Hi James, and welcome to WILDLABS! It's a truly amazing community :)
Just wondering if TCA is only focused on camera-trapping or if you all are using other conservation tech like acoustic monitoring?
7 March 2023 12:17am
Hi James.
I'm Akiba from FreakLabs, a conservation tech company. We're currently doing a lot of work in Australia and also there about half our time. Most of our work deals with wireless monitoring or camera trap modifications. We don't do much on the post-processing/analysis side, however we're currently engaged in several projects modifying camera traps for specific purposes. It'd be great to have a call and hear more about what you are doing over there. Since you're in New Guinea, it'd be easy to visit when we're in Australia which would make any collaborations much easier. Let me know if you'd like to have a call and explore potential collaborations.

I think all conferences nowadays should be hybrid. We obviously have the capacity to do virtual since that's what everyone pivoted to during the pandemic, but I do also value the benefits of in-person components. So hybrid seems the best of the both worlds to continue increasing accessibility and inclusion while still fostering collaboration and networking. Just my 2 cents.
I'm always a sucker for a live demo (on anything really) too!

Is ICCB mostly academic or is there typically a lot of involvement from NGOs and companies?
6 February 2023 10:41am
It's pretty big for NGOs and I would say there is growing involvement from companies? But it's usually those with strong conservation partnerships. The bigger one is World Conservation Congress - but this is only every few years. We've put in a workshop aligned with our movement ecology work, will likely do some talks, and will be hosting side events (both networking and meetings). I'm hearing about quite a lot of other tech events/conversations being organised, so it should be a good place to connect with a good cross section of the conservation tech community.

WILDLABS Platform Updates

11 October 2022 5:22pm
Sneaking into Filip's serious platfrom thread here to share that we just charged past 1,000,000 pageviews! We've seen a big uptick since we launched the new site back in May, so Filip's team definitely filled the brief of making the wealth of information held in our community easier to find and explore. Feels like a solid milestone we should celebrate :D
22 November 2022 6:52pm
Hi everyone!
You may have noticed already but we've been hard at work here in the Octophin Digital team on a completely refreshed discussions system for WILDLABS that we've been rolling out over the last two weeks. I didn't want to write about it until a few bugs were sorted out but here's that update.
We didn't quite get the discussions user experience right at launch (especially when it comes to replies / sub threads) so we hope this new version is a lot easier to use.
November 2022 (several deployments so no clear date this time!)
Discussions
- Better signposting of buttons to reply to a thread or a specific comment
- Quick, no page refresh comment editing system
- Inline form to post a reply to a comment on a discussion
- Deep linking to specific replies to a comment from a notification
- Inline, collapsible display of comment replies, displaying avatars of who's replied
- Options to expand or close all reply threads
- Faster lazy loading of discussion threads without a flash at the start
- Many other design and interaction changes
- We've pushed in some replies imported from the previous version of the platform that were replies to replies to replies(...) so they are now simply listed in date order on the reply thread rather than nested so deep it was hard to find them. Replies are (hopefully uncontroversially) now limited to one level deep.
Hover states
- Thank you to @valeria in the Octophin team for adding many lovely hover states to things across the site that will hopefully make exploring WILDLABS more enjoyable.
Feed
- Sorting on the site feeds (including group feeds) was stacked in favour of new content rather than updates to discussions. A new comment on a discussion will now pop a discussion to the top of the feed so you can quickly see what is new around the site. The feeds can still be filtered to specific types of content in case you want to filter out discussion updates.
---
I hope the above changes make the site much more usable. As always, please pop any feedback over to the WILDLABS team in the New Platform Help: Troubleshooting & bugs discussion. A gigantic thank you to @JakeBurton in the WILDLABS team for a mammoth amount of testing, feedback and suggestions for the above.

Hi everyone!
Happy 2023 and a slightly unusual bug fix to mark the first WILDLABS Platform update post of the year.
Our emoji / reaction system broke due to the library it relies on, Twitter's Twemoji, going down (for reasons discussed in the tweet link below). We have had to fall back to native browser emoji while a replacement / mirror of these is slotted in. This may mean emoji display slightly differently for you in the picker, more resembling your current device / browser.
Thank you to @Alasdair for sending me the below tweet which helped work out what was wrong:

Crowdfunding Aerial Baseline Study of Ghost Gear in Koh Phangan, Thailand
18 December 2022 11:06am
We are developing a project in Thailand, using drones to locate lost & discarded fishing gear across Koh Phangan, Thailand.
We're 86% there & only need $1500 to get us over the line. If you can help us, we would really appreciate it!
This project uses drones to create a baseline survey of lost fishing gear & document effects of entanglement on marine species.
We are working with Core Sea & Koh Phangan Sea Guardians to develop a locally led method for ongoing monitoring for discarded fishing gear, using drones.
Thank you, Sol, Tania & Kat
