Hi Rob, Yes these are indeed the models. They are as reliable as the old originals. I have the GT120B's, G2S with/without solar and some GW's. Production has stopped and they won't be available in the future and I'm getting hold of their remaining boards. Have a big batch of GT120A's too which were only deployed once on a big seabird project which I will test at some stage and make available.

I have couple of good use cases for this model in a conservation project here in Cambodia however limited by lack of funding.  Would be happy chat if you are interested.

Finding a Data LoggerΒ

Hi!  I am struggling to find a data logger that works for my needs and am wondering if it is easier to build one, or if someone might have any suggestions for where to look....

If it's a standard Arduino Uno, you can use the Software Serial library to emulate the serial ports you need. Otherwise you can use the ATMega1284P and the MightyCore core files which opens things up to two hardware serial ports (UARTs) as well as software serial. Or you can use the ATMega4809 with MegaCoreX which will give you up to 4 hardware serial ports (1 for debug and up to 3 for peripherals).  These are all usable within the Arduino environment.

Good luck with your project!

Akiba

Thank you all for this advice! I'll be looking into all of these options. I really appreciate you all taking the time to think about this.

I ran out of time to pull this together for my current research trip, but I hope to be able to implement it for my summer field season.

Snare detection technologies

Snares are a pervasive threat to wildlife around the world – indiscriminately killing hundreds of thousands of animals. Snares are notoriously hard to locate in the field...

I’m very interested in this topic. I know the thread is a couple of years old, so I’m wondering if there have been any recent tech breakthroughs or new suggestions.

I am interested in expanding our capability and understanding of snare detection by canines. We have two canines working in Asia that have successfully detected snares in training scenarios. However, final protocols for training and deployment are being developed and integrated into the team's capability.

A potential enhancement is to add technology that supports the canine's detection capability.

I love the live-stream pin feature!

Hi Tim, I just discovered your great little device and about to use it for the first time this weekend. Would love to be directly in touch since we are testing it out as an option to recommend to our clients :) Love that it includes Australian birds! Cheers Debbie

Hi @timbirdweather I've now got them up and running and winding how I can provide feedback on species ID to improve the accuracy over time. It would be really powerful to have a confirmation capability when looking at the soundscape options to confirm which of the potential species it actually is or confirm it is neither to help develop the algorithms.

Also, is it possible to connect the PUC to a mobile hotspot to gather data for device that isn't close to wifi? And have it so that it can detect either wifi or hotspot when in range? Thanks!

Using citizen science image analysis to measure seabird phenology

Our new paper uses data from the citizen science project, Seabird Watch (hosted on the Zooniverse platform; seabirdwatch.org), to measure seabird phenology. Volunteers marked birds in time-lapse images to investigate arrival and departure to/from the breeding grounds.
