This course is designed to equip participants with the power of utilizing mobile technology for efficient and effective data collection. The course delivers the knowledge and skills needed to leverage mobile technology for data collection in a variety of sectors and contexts. From surveys and assessments to monitoring and evaluation, this course will equip participants with the essential tools to streamline data collection processes and enhance data quality and accuracy.

Through a combination of theoretical concepts and hands-on exercises, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of mobile data collection using ODK. They will learn how to design and customize data collection forms, configure mobile devices for data collection, and utilize data analysis tools to derive meaningful insights.

This course is designed for professionals who want to enhance their skills in using the Open Data Kit (ODK) platform for collecting, managing, and analyzing data in the field.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Mobile Data Collection and ODK

  • Understanding the benefits and challenges of mobile data collection
  • Introduction to the Open Data Kit (ODK) platform
  • Overview of ODK components and functionality
  • Setting up the ODK environment and tools

Day 2: Designing Data Collection Forms with ODK Build

  • Configuring Android devices for ODK data collection
  • Installing and setting up ODK Collect on mobile devices
  • Managing forms and data on mobile devices
  • Ensuring data security and privacy in mobile data collection

Day 3: Configuring Mobile Devices for Data Collection

  • Creating and customizing data collection forms using ODK Build
  • Defining form structure, question types, and validation rules
  • Incorporating skip logic and branching in forms
  • Testing and deploying forms to mobile devices

Day 4: Collecting Data in the Field with ODK

  • Best practices for data collection in the field
  • Conducting surveys and assessments using ODK Collect
  • Troubleshooting common issues during data collection
  • Uploading and synchronizing data with the ODK server

Day 5: Data Management and Analysis with ODK

  • Exporting and managing data collected with ODK
  • Cleaning, transforming, and preparing data for analysis
  • Analyzing and visualizing data using external tools (e.g., Excel, R, or Power BI)
  • Generating reports and insights from ODK-collected data
