We are producing hard- and software for small scale research radars to monitor airborne biomass automatically. We can distinguish birds, bats and insects through day and night. The radar provides reliable quantitative measures of biomass within a range of about 3m to 1500m, however depending on the size of the target (e.g. a housefly can be detected up to 150m). The main drawback of the radar is its limited taxonomic resolution (see https://doi.org/10.1111/ecog.04025 & https://doi.org/10.1111/ibi.12473 & https://doi.org/10.3390/rs13091839). To supplement the radar system I am searching for automated systems (e.g. camera) for insect species identification, at least for near ground observations. Any suggestions of existing system fulfilling the task? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
