WILDLABS.NET Functionality and Features - have your say

Hi everyone,

We've been getting lots of constructive feedback on the site from different communtiy members getting in touch through private messages and email. It's great to hear your thoughts about what you love about the site and what you wish it could do.

At the moment, we're deploying updates to the site every couple of weeks. If your feedback is a minor change or improvement (e.g. adding the ability to tag other members in a post), we will look to incorporate it into our schedule in the near term. If what you're suggesting is a major change to the site (e.g. adding a personalised, responsive landing page to the community) we will add for consideration in the major development we're planning down the track.

Recent Updates:

  • Latest Conversations Feed: You wanted a quick way to see what conversations are happening across the site, so we've added a new responsive feed to the front page of the community that appears when you're logged in. In this table, you'll see the three latest posts in the community, what group they're happening in and when they were posts. This table show the latest posts, regardless of whether you're a member of the group they are occurring in, so you'll have a nice snapshot of where the activity is in the community.
  • Content arranged in reverse chronological order: All content across the site is now ordered in reverse chronological order, so that when you visit the member directory, the group listings and lists of conversations within a group, these will all be arranged so that the newest additions display at the top of the list.
  • @user functionality: You will soon be able to use @user to tag a specific community member in your post with their username. If you are tagged in a post, you will receive an alert.

Community Members' Wish List of Functionality:

  • Reddit style floating lists of content, so that the most upvoted or popular conversations or groups appear at the top of listings.
  • Personalised, responsive profile pages, where relevant content is pulled from across the site and displayed conveniently
  • Database capacity to faciliate sharing data sets easily.
  • Developer sandbox for developing code collaboratively
  • Options for switching around layout of community front page (e.g. groups condensed into a list that is easy to view)

We will continue to update this thread with new updates from our development team based on feedback from community members.

We want to hear from you about what you want for your community, so if you have ideas that should be added to this list please leave a comment below or get in touch with our team

Cheers,
The WILDLABS.NET Team

Some feedback coming in from other parts of the forum:

@josechitty - Is it possible to arrange the forum so that the last post appears first, I find that when I have read a thread I have to always click on the thread and then click on the last page. I guess this is a matter of personal preference so it would be interesting to see what others think.

@NatureCounters - That's a bit o/t, bit I agree with @josechitty  on that. Having to click "last" and scroll down is getting tiresome. It would be a nice option to have last reply first, and would be nice to have the option of limitless pages so the entire thread appears as one page too. How about it @StephODonnell  ? My other wish is that the entire reply should appear in the mail, so I know whether to jump into Wildlabs to respond.

Thanks for the feedback - it's honestly so helpful to hear what community members want. I've actually been wondering the same thing as I've been keeping an eye on some of the longer threads starting to accumulate - it's a bit annoying to have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the thread and then click through to the last page. At the same time, I appreciate the logic and readability of the comments being posted in chronological order - particularly for newcomers to the thread. Perhaps a compromise could be to have a page counter somewhere closer to the top of the page so you can jump through the pages, or straight to the last comment? I also like the idea of a limitless page option. When we do some more development on the site, one of things I'd like to explore is adding in multiple options for how you view the site, so you can arrange it (e.g. limitless scrolling or condensed threads) as you like. I've no idea if that would be possible, but it sure would be nice!

I'm also really keen to completely revamp our email system, so that you can not only view the full reply, but get different sorts of alerts, eg when a new thread is started in a group you're a member in, or change how often you get alerts (e.g. a once a week wrap-up digest). Is there anything else you'd like to see?

Can I get notifications for a group? I want to get an email each time a new topic is added to 'Drones' without having to keep coming back.

I think there might be room for improvement in the forum layout, and information shown.

Having only 5 threads per page restricts the number of active discussions that can be held simultaneously before one of them loses visibility by being pushed to the next page.  Increasing this number, or adding an 'infinite scroll' feature found in other forum software like Discourse might help to facilitate more discussion.

Additionally, knowing which user was the last to respond to a thread would also be quite useful.  This would allow users to quickly identify when admins, core contributers, or the original author have added to the discussion.
