Request for GPS based animal movement data

Hello WildLabs community,

My organization is called Internet of Elephants and we are a start up social enterprise working on innovative approaches to use tech and data to create a stronger connection between the public and wildlife.  You can read more about us at www.internetofelephants.com.  I'm also the WildLabs Community Manager for Games for Conservation.

In partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society we are exploring the use of online games to create a greater incentive for people to get involved in the lives of various species of wildlife and wildlife conservation in general, and generate substantial revenue for conservation in the process.

Our ideas are centralized around the use of real data that is already being gathered as part of existing research projects around the world.  We think this data, if presented enchantingly (and securely) to the public, could be the key to create a more lasting relationship between people and wild animals. Our first steps are to prove this could be true through R&D and proofs of concepts.

We are currently in the process of securing large volumes of historical data on a variety of species strictly to evaluate where the potential lies and what type of concepts could resonate with the public.  I am requesting your help to provide us historical data for any species you may be studying.

Specifically, we are looking for:

1 - Movement data of tagged wild animals, marine, land, or air - preferably coming from regular GPS transmissions

2 - Any base data that supports the above

3 - Optionally, any supplementary data about the animals that is easy to consume and use to create a 'story' such as photographs, family lineage, and anecdotal information that give a fuller picture of the life of that animal

4 - 6 months to 1 year's worth of past data (it does not matter if it is recent so long as it is continuous for at least 6 months)

Eventually, our model will be based on returning a large percentage of revenues generated from this data to all contributing organizations.  But we are not there yet and so at this point we are offering simply the opportunity to contribute and participate in a potentially very impactful proof of concept through the donation of data.

To be clear, we are right now only looking for access for R&D, not for actual use or visibility to the public.  All data would be for use only within the confines of this partnership and any other parties (technology and gaming companies)  that would have access to it would be bound by the terms of Non Disclosure Agreements.

If you would like to be involved or know others that may, please get in touch with me directly at [email protected].

Thank you

Gautam!
