About the Opportunity 

FFI is  seeking a motivated, skilled individual for the position of Technical Specialist, Analytics. The Technical Specialist will work closely with FFI’s regional and cross-cutting programmes to support and grow the use of spatial technologies and analyses for conservation planning and robust monitoring throughout the organisation. Their work will encompass technical delivery/oversight, advice and training, and you will support efforts to develop new opportunities and collaborations with suitable partners to scale-up the use of spatial approaches by our partners and projects.

Qualifications

  • Have postgraduate qualifications in some aspect of applied conservation data analysis or technologies, particularly Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or Remote Sensing (RS), or alternatively substantial experience in applied GIS/RS with a degree in life sciences, environmental studies or other relevant subject.
  • Have proven experience in conservation, or the environmental sector,
  • Have a range and depth of skills in the collection, analyses and visualization of wildlife, conservation or environmental data.
  • Have strong numerical, writing and organisational skills, you will show initiative and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Practical experience in applied statistics, modelling, programming and/or webGIS is required.

Roles and responsibilities

Technical support to projects

  • Promote and facilitate close collaboration with FFI regional and other cross-cutting teams, project managers and partner organisations, ensuring a joined up ‘One FFI’ approach to project design and delivery, utilising best practice and innovation to embed analytics as appropriate
  •  Provide technical services to FFI projects including, for example, habitat mapping, spatial planning for PA design, connectivity analyses, participatory mapping
  • Collate and contribute maps, data visualizations and technical writing to reporting, proposals and external communication pieces
  • Coordinate the development of models and tools using ESRI and/or relevant open source software (e.g. Google Earth Engine, R)
  • Provide and coordinate technical advice to regional, cross-cutting and in-country teams across a range of geospatial tools and approaches

Wider support to Analytics and Conservation Technology capacity development

  • Develop training materials and contribute to the delivery of training for staff and partners in geospatial data management, software, tools and methods
  • Coordinate the development of FFI ArcOnline platform and uptake of associated tools (e.g. ArcPro, Survey123, FieldMaps)
  • Support the Senior Technical Specialist, Conservation Technology, to lead the broadening of the use of open source software and analytical approaches within FFI for conservation data collection, analysis and visualization
  • Working with the Senior Technical Specialist, Conservation Technology, bring together regionallydistributed FFI Analytics and Conservation Technology practitioners, to facilitate knowledge exchange via internal (e.g. Yammer, OurFFI, Microsoft Teams) and external (e.g. WILDLABS) community platforms.
  • Develop new projects and collaborations for the Conservation Technology team to enable and promote the advanced use of geospatial technologies
  • Liaise with the Communications team to develop web-based GIS applications to support external communication goals
  • Provide advice or support to Regional teams and other cross-cutting teams, as required
  •  Keep up-to-date with developments in conservation and geospatial tools and methods

General

  • Ensure all work is delivered in full compliance with FFI strategy, policies and procedures, including Focal Point and the Delegation of Authorities
  • Design and manage assigned funds and budgets in full compliance with FFI procedures
  • Provide technical mentoring support to allocated staff working on analytics
  • Participate in discussions and presentations with central and distributed FFI conservation programmes, and with partners and external stakeholders as appropriate
  • Represent FFI to external parties as requested
  • Undertake any other tasks commensurate with the position that may be requested of you, from timeto-time, by the Senior Technical Specialist, Conservation Technology.

Terms and Conditions

  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Duration of Contract: Permanent
  • Probation Period: Six months
  • Salary: circa £36,000 per annum dependent on skills and experience
  • Location: Fauna & Flora International, Cambridge (current policy offers partial remote working within the UK))
  • Benefits: 25 working days annual holiday entitlement plus Public/Bank Holidays and any normal working days that fall between 24th December and 31st December inclusive, during which time FFI UK offices are closed. For employees on UK-based contracts, FFI currently provides a pension contribution of 8% of salary after 3 months’ continuous employment. Group Life insurance, currently set at a benefit of 4 x basic salary
  • Hours of Work: This is a full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday inclusive
