Opportunity: Global Science Data and Technology Graduate Intern

The Global Science Data and Technology intern will research existing spatially explicit habitat condition indices and evaluate how and whether they can be enhanced to produce a regularly updated, publicly available, index. Following this initial review, the intern will help develop a prototype index and implement a prototype data production and delivery pipeline.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience using geospatial information systems
  • Familiarity with global environmental indices
  • Proven experience with a programming language - Python or JavaScript prefered, but any programming language would be relevant (R, C, Java, etc).
  • Pursuing a graduate program in environmental studies, ecology, geospatial systems, data science, information science, or computer science. Those studying outside these areas are still highly encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

  • History of large-scale geospatial analysis
  • Familiarity with cloud computing
  • Familiarity with Google Earth Engine
  • Proven experience in understanding scientific publications relating to environmental indices
  • Experience programming in JavaScript or Python
  • Experience programming in R

Learning Outcomes

This internship will aim to focus on understanding how global indices of habitat condition are constructed, and how to build reliable systems to produce and deliver those data. It will provide gaining further proficiency in GIS systems and software infrastructure implementation. It will also result in developing expertise on the state of the art of environmental monitoring.

WWF interns will be provided a set of professional development opportunities, aimed at increasing their exposure to conservation and sustainability careers. This includes:

  • Opportunity to present their work to intern peers and WWF staff;
