Carnegie Mellon Bird ID with AI Research Study

Hi everyone! We are still looking for more participants who have experience with birding to participate in our study 🐦. Read below to view the details!

We (@Philipp Spitzer and I) are researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) seeking to better understand how explanations for artificial intelligence (AI) make predictions more useful, usable, and trustworthy to end-users. To investigate this, we are running a task that asks users to identify images of birds, and then collaborate with AI and generated explanations to arrive at a final identification. Participants will be shown images of birds commonly seen throughout North America and view information from AI such as natural language explanations or example-based explanations to rationalize the bird species classification. The data collected in this research study will be used to identify important characteristics of explanations for image classification under uncertainty when the decision-makers have varying levels of expertise and help us design better explanations for artificial intelligence in general.

This task is part of a research study by Katelyn Morrison at Carnegie Mellon University, IRB STUDY2022_00000062. Participation is voluntary. Participants will be asked to complete a 20-minute-long web-based task. After completing the entire task, participants will be compensated an Amazon gift card of 5 USD at a rate of approximately 15 USD/hour.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please view the study here (https://explanations-9a4b7.web.app/). First, you will be presented with a screening questionnaire to determine if you are eligible to participate in this study. Along with the criteria listed below, you must pass the domain knowledge test (be familiar with birding and/or do bird-related work) and classify 2 of the 3 common ”easy” bird species shown to you correctly. If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will automatically be shown a consent form page to agree to before doing the study task.

Eligibility:

  • 18 years+
  • Fluent in English
  • Living in the U.S.
  • Previous experience with birding (participated in birding activities and/or doing bird-related work)
  • Browser Requirements: Chrome/Safari/ Firefox

Thanks a lot in advance. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns related to this study, please reach out to me ([email protected]).
