The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Google Cloud have collaborated on a new technology using acoustic sensors to detect gunshots and identify poacher hotspots, aiming to protect endangered species. In a trial at Dja Faunal Reserve in Cameroon, the technology proved cost-effective, continuously recording events within a 1km range. Google's AI analyzed the data, pinpointing gunshot locations for anti-poaching patrols. The focus is currently on gunshots, but there are plans to expand capabilities to identify other sounds, potentially aiding conservation efforts. The project aims to raise funds for further deployment in conservation areas.
